Shona MacdonaldTwo NortheastFrom: September 12 - October 17, 2009 Proof Gallery is pleased to present Two Northeast, the Boston solo debut of Shona Macdonald. Working in variety of media Macdonald explores memory and the experience of place using landscape as vehicle and mode of portraiture. Two Northeast puns on her biographical past and present, growing up in North East Scotland and her current location in Western Massachusetts in the Northeast of United States. In her installation at Proof, collaged envelope innards become coastlines which are repeated and refigured into topographies. Delicate and dirty, fugitive piles of snow recall floating isles. Oscillating from displacement to familiarity, Macdonald evokes the tension between the longed for and the lived experience of place. Shona Macdonald received her MFA in 1996 in studio arts from the University of Illinois in Chicago and her BFA in 1992 from Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. She has had selected solos shows at Reeves Contemporary, NY, NY (2008), Den Contemporary LA, CA, (2007), Skestos-Gabriele in Chicago IL, (2005), Galerie Refugium in Berlin, Germany, (2002) and Fassbender Gallery, Chicago (1998 and 2000). Her work has been reviewed in Art in America, Art News, LA Times, (Both for Solo Shows) , Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, and Harpers Magazine. She is a 2009 recipient of a grant from the Pollock Krasner Foundation, NY, NY. Shona Macdonald is a Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
